LONG HOURS OF LADY CONDUCTORS - Dec 1, 1917
The Town Council's agenda for Monday night's meeting included the following on the
Tramway Committee, "the General Manager stated in reply to a question by Councillor Catt that it was
a fact that some of the women conductors had on occasion worked 70 hours per week, and that is
was also quite possible, although he did know of a case, that some had been called upon to work a
further five hours after the expiration of their ordinary day, but this had been absolutely unavoidable
consequent upon the large incidence of sickness among women conductors during the last five or six
weeks."
I should have thought that the wages books would have shown whether any of these girls had worked
extra time, but is any case it is a shameful thing that they should have to work so long.
